This week begins extended Wednesday hours, with a Saturday closing at The Book Corner. The bookstore will be open until 7 p.m. on Wednesdays, beginning September 4 through December 2013, and the store will be closed on Saturday, September 7 for Beaverton’s Celebration Parade.
“Customers have asked for evening hours,” said L. “Sam” Sofaer, bookstore manager, “and we wanted to make it convenient for families to shop for books or drop off donations after school or after work.” She noted that the popular Beaverton bookstore, operated by the New Friends of the Beaverton City Library, relies on volunteers to staff the store, adding that “we had to be sure our volunteers can support the added schedule.” The store is currently seeking volunteers with a knowledge of fiction, nonfiction, or children’s books; application forms are available on the website or at the store.
Regular bookstore hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. This week only, The Book Corner will be closed on Saturday so that everyone can enjoy the city’s 56th annual Celebration Parade.
Wednesday’s extended hours this fall are on a trial basis. Margaret Kelleher, NFBCL President, said board members and bookstore staff are asking customers to “stop by the store and let us know if you like the new hours.”
The Book Corner is launching the new schedule with a Buy 1/Get 1 sale for the week of September 3-6, 2013. Customers can buy one book for $1.50 and get a second book (of equal value) free; limit 20 books (40 total). Also, Tuesday through Friday this week, customers can buy two CDs for $1.00.
The Book Corner, located across from City Park at 12470 S.W. 5th St., will also accept donations of “gently used” books, CDs and movies until 7 p.m. on Wednesdays. All books and media sold at The Book Corner and through the online store are donated by the community. Proceeds, after operating expenses, support supplemental programs and furnishings for the Beaverton City Library and the Murray Scholls Branch Library. Donations to the nonprofit organization are tax-deductible.
